Tare is built out of other people's work. This page names all of it, with the licence each piece is used under.

The photograph

Behind every page: Maniola jurtina (meadow brown) on Vicia cracca, Ruda Milicka, by Agnieszka Kwiecień, Nova, used under CC BY-SA 4.0. It was found on Wikimedia Commons on 2026-09-17.

What we changed: cropped to the lower-middle band by tools/crop.mjs (x 0, y 0.10, w 1, h 0.62 of the original), then scaled, softened and toned by tools/make-ground.mjs — the settings are in the file's own log line and in CLAUDE.md

Why this one: A DECISION, not a measurement. Tare is the weight of the empty container — and a tare is also the vetch that grows up through a crop, which is the plant in this photograph: Vicia cracca, with a meadow brown on it. The picture is soft everywhere except the flower and the wing, so numbers in front of it have nothing to compete with, and it carries three colours the brand is built from: the violet of the vetch, the amber of the butterfly and the green between them. A sibling learned that optimising for the calmest possible background picks grey concrete; this one was chosen because it is the site's own idea, and then measured.
